Decreasing stitches

Decreasing stitch can be used when you want to decrease the number of stitches knitted in previous row.  The simplest method of decreasing stitch is to work two or three stitches together depending upon the requirement of pattern.

WORKING TWO STITCHES TOGETHER:

Knitwise:

*With the thread at the back of work, insert the right hand needle from left to right through two stitches instead of one and then knit them together as one stitch. Repeat from*. This is abbreviated as Knit two together (k2tog).

Purlwise:

*With the thread at the front of work, insert the right hand needle from right to left through two stitches instead of one and then purl them together as one stitch. Repeat from*. This is abbreviated as Purl two together (P2tog).

SLIP STITCH DECREASE:

1. Slip the first stitch onto the right hand needle in a knitwise direction without knitting it, then knit the next stitch.

2. Using the left hand needle ift the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch and drop it off the needle. This is abbreviated as slip one, knit one, pass slipped stitch over (sl1, k1, psso). It is also abbreviated as skpo.

KNIT TWO TOGETHER THROUGH BACK OF LOOPS:

With the thread at the back, the stitches are knitted through the back of the loops, thus twisting the stitches. Insert the right hand needle from right to left through the back of the first two stitches, then knit them together as one stitch. This is abbreviated as K2togtbl.

PURL TWO TOGETHER THROUGH BACK OF LOOPS:

With the thread at the front, the stitches are purled together through the back of loops. From back insert the right hand needle from left to right through the back of the first two stitches, then purl them together as one stitch. This is abbreviated as p2togtbl.

Slip Slip Knit:

With the thread at the back, slip the first and second stitches knitwise, one at a time onto the right hand needle, then insert the left hand needle into the front of these two stitches from the left, and knit them together. This is abbreviated as ssk.
